Pediatric Surgery Excellence: A First for Botswana
In a remarkable development, the Ministry, with support from Kids Operating Room (KidsOR) and funding from philanthropists Mr. and Ms. Lansdown, has established two Pediatric Surgical Centres of Excellence. These centres, located at Princess Marina Hospital and Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital, are a first for the country and a significant stride in strengthening pediatric surgical care.
Both facilities are equipped with cutting-edge, child-specific surgical infrastructure. The impact is already evident; more than 150 children have received life-changing surgeries at Princess Marina Hospital alone since June 2025. Waiting times for pediatric surgery have been drastically reduced, a testament to the success of this initiative.
However, Dr. Nyanga notes that shortages of specialized personnel, such as pediatric anesthetists and nurses, remain a challenge. In partnership with KidsOR, the Ministry is working to build a skilled workforce to deliver safe and continuous pediatric surgical care nationwide.
Expanding Surgical Capacity: A Solar Solution
To strengthen surgical resilience, a Solar Surgery System is being implemented in 12 hospitals across Botswana. This innovative initiative ensures that surgical services continue uninterrupted during power outages, a critical aspect of providing reliable healthcare.
The KidsOR project, supported by the Lansdowns, has brought about transformative change. It has reduced waiting times, improved theatre infrastructure, and introduced sustainable energy solutions. With Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital's official opening and ongoing training programs, Botswana is poised to become a regional leader in pediatric surgery in Southern Africa.

Two cataract surgery campaigns conducted in 2025 at Selebi Phikwe Government Hospital and Scottish Livingstone Hospital have restored sight to a total of 694 Batswana. For many beneficiaries, 2025 was a life-changing year, as they finally received the treatment they had been waiting for.
