Canada Unveils Women's Hockey Team for 2026 Olympics: A Star-Studded Lineup!
The Ice Warriors Are Back!
Hockey Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee have revealed the roster for the women's hockey team, and it's a powerhouse lineup! With the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan on the horizon, Canada is gearing up to defend its legacy.
23 players have been selected, including a remarkable 16 Olympic gold medalists from the Beijing Games. The team boasts a perfect blend of experience and fresh talent, with seven players set to make their Olympic debut. But here's where it gets interesting...
The roster features:
- Goaltenders: Ann-Renée Desbiens, Emerance Maschmeyer, and Kayle Osborne, a trio of talented netminders.
- Defence: Erin Ambrose, Renata Fast, Sophie Jaques, Jocelyne Larocque, Ella Shelton, Kati Tabin, and Claire Thompson, forming a solid blue line.
- Forwards: Emily Clark, Sarah Fillier, Jenn Gardiner, Julia Gosling, Brianne Jenner, Emma Maltais, Sarah Nurse, Kristin O'Neill, Marie-Philip Poulin, Natalie Spooner, Laura Stacey, Blayre Turnbull, and Daryl Watts, a dynamic group of scorers and playmakers.
The team was carefully chosen by a panel of experts, including general manager Gina Kingsbury, head coach Troy Ryan, and senior manager Cherie Piper. The selection process was rigorous, considering players' performances in training camps, the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL), collegiate seasons, and international competitions like the Rivalry Series against the USA.
"Selecting the final roster is always a difficult task," said Kingsbury. "We had a talented pool of athletes, and we're confident we've picked a team that embodies the spirit and skill of Canadian hockey."
This team is no stranger to success. They won gold at the 2022 Olympics and silver at the 2025 IIHF Women's World Championship. Marie-Philip Poulin, a five-time Olympian, expressed her excitement: "Wearing the Maple Leaf is an honor, and I'm thrilled to be part of this team's journey to Milan."
Canada has dominated women's hockey, winning four consecutive gold medals from 2002 to 2014, with additional silver medals in 1998 and 2018.
"These athletes represent the best of Canada," said Hockey Canada's president, Katherine Henderson. "We're proud to support them as they inspire the next generation."
In Milan, the women's tournament will be held from Feb 5-19. Canada is in Group A with Czechia, Finland, Switzerland, and the USA. They'll face Finland in their opening match, followed by Switzerland and Czechia, before a highly anticipated showdown with the USA.
Team Canada's chef de mission, Jennifer Heil, praised the team: "Our women's hockey team showcases the talent and determination of Canadian athletes. We're excited to see them compete in Milan."
As the team prepares for Milan, the excitement builds. Will Canada continue its dominance in women's hockey? And what impact will the Olympic experience have on the seven debutants? Only time will tell.
Note: All nominations are subject to approval by the Canadian Olympic Committee's Team Selection Committee.
