Colombia's second-largest pension fund, AFP Protección, is set to offer Bitcoin exposure to its investors. This move comes as a response to the growing demand for diversified investment options, particularly in the digital asset space. Juan David Correa, president of Protección SA, confirmed the initiative, emphasizing the importance of diversification. He stated that only clients who meet specific risk criteria will be able to allocate a portion of their portfolios to Bitcoin, ensuring a measured approach to this new asset class. This development follows a similar step by Skandia Administradora de Fondos de Pensiones y Cesantías, which began offering Bitcoin exposure in one of its portfolios last year. With this launch, Protección becomes the second major pension fund administrator in Colombia to enter the digital asset space. The Bitcoin fund will not change the core pension investments, which remain focused on fixed income instruments, equities, and other traditional assets. AFP Protección, founded in 1991, manages over 220 trillion Colombian pesos in assets for over 8.5 million clients across various pension plans and severance accounts. Colombia's broader pension fund market reached 527.3 trillion pesos as of November 2025, with a significant portion invested abroad. Additionally, Colombia has introduced mandatory crypto reporting rules, requiring exchanges, custodians, and intermediaries to collect and submit user and transaction data. This aligns the country with the OECD's Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework, enabling the automatic exchange of crypto-related tax information with foreign authorities.
