Commandment's Kentucky Derby Dream: A Breeder's Journey with Lee Pokoik (2026)

A Thoroughbred Breeder's Dream: The Road to the Kentucky Derby

A 35-year journey, a historic first, and a potential Kentucky Derby contender.

Lee Pokoik, a veteran in the world of Thoroughbred breeding, is on the cusp of achieving a remarkable milestone. With over three decades of expertise, he now aims to fulfill his dream of attending the prestigious Kentucky Derby (G1) as a proud breeder.

Enter Commandment, a star in the making. This talented colt, sired by Into Mischief, captured the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) on February 28th, setting the stage for a potential Derby run. Commandment's dam, Sippican Harbor, is no stranger to success, having won the 2018 Spinaway Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.

Pokoik's breeding philosophy is strategic. He breeds to sell, managing a select group of 12-15 horses each year. His strategy involves selling all colts while retaining the best fillies to enhance his broodmare band. Commandment, however, was offered for sale twice without success. It wasn't until the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2023 that Case Clay Thoroughbred Management stepped in, purchasing the colt for $500,000 on behalf of Wathnan Racing.

"That Fountain of Youth race was something special," Pokoik reminisced. "When you look at Commandment, you see a colt with a winning pedigree. He has Into Mischief's bloodlines, the expertise of trainer Brad Cox, and the skills of jockey Irad Ortiz. Add to that, he's out of a Grade 1-winning mare. He's a smart, fearless horse with a strong gallop. I believe he has what it takes to go the distance."

Pokoik's experience with top-tier horses and the Derby trail is not new. He previously bred Gunmetal Gray, a winner of the 2019 Sham Stakes (G3) and a Grade 1-placed juvenile under trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Unfortunately, an injury in March 2019 dashed their Derby dreams.

"I've had the privilege of breeding some exceptional horses and seeing them compete in the Breeders' Cup a few times," Pokoik shared.

As for Commandment, Pokoik is cautiously optimistic. "If he stays sound and makes it to the Derby, and if he were to win... Oh, it would be incredible! I'll be cheering him on every step of the way."

At 80 years of age, Pokoik's enthusiasm for the sport remains unwavering. He approaches breeding with a business mindset, always assessing the market value of his stock. He hinted that Sippican Harbor, Commandment's dam, could be offered for sale this fall, depending on Commandment's continued success. She will be bred back to Into Mischief, ensuring a full sibling to Commandment.

"She's expecting a McKinzie this month, and we have a yearling filly by Elite Power that will be sold as a yearling," Pokoik revealed.

When asked about his potential Derby attendance, Pokoik, who is no stranger to the challenges of large crowds and parking, replied, "Oh, I'd love to be there! Hopefully, I'll be in the paddock, and if Commandment wins, I'll be right there in the winner's circle."

Will Commandment make it to the Kentucky Derby? Will Pokoik's dream come true? Stay tuned, as this story unfolds, and feel free to share your thoughts and predictions in the comments below!
