Ready to be inspired? A football club in Guildford is making a massive impact, and it's not just about the goals! They've just won the national community club of the year award, and their secret weapon isn't fancy footwork – it's weight loss.
Guildford's Man v Fat football club is a six-a-side league with a unique twist. Teams earn extra goal bonuses based on how much weight they lose. Talk about motivation! At the recent Man v Fat football awards, the Guildford club took home the top prize, celebrating their incredible work in improving men's health and well-being.
Mark Smithies, a player, shared the secret to their success: "Being part of such a positive and supportive group does a lot for your confidence and mindset." This highlights the powerful role community plays in achieving goals.
This initiative, backed by Surrey County Council and accredited by the Football Association, targets men with a body mass index (BMI) of 27.5 or higher. Before each 30-minute game, players weigh in, and their weight loss is factored in alongside their goals to determine their league standing.
Smithies enthusiastically added, "Joining Man v Fat Guildford has honestly made a huge difference for me, I've lost weight, I've got fitter and made great mates along the way." He also highlighted the positive impact on his mental health and the sense of community. "It's more than just football and lifestyle, it's a proper community, and I'm proud to represent Man v Fat Football Guildford."
Currently, the Guildford club boasts 68 players. And the results? In the last year alone, they've collectively lost over 34 stone, which is equivalent to 216kg!
But here's where it gets controversial... Is using weight loss as a scoring factor a fair way to encourage fitness? Some might argue it adds unnecessary pressure, while others see it as a brilliant incentive. What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments!
