That's the inspiring mission behind a new pub in Brighton, spearheaded by none other than the beloved food writer and TV chef, Nigella Lawson! Opened in collaboration with Baroness Rosa Monckton, who founded the charity Team Domenica in honor of her daughter Domenica, who has Down's syndrome, The North Star provides invaluable real-world experience. It's designed to build skills, boost confidence, and foster independence.
Georgia Pink, the charity's enrichment coordinator, emphasizes their core goal: "Our main goal is to empower... and help them gain paid employment." And this is where the impact truly resonates. Team Domenica was born in 2016 after Domenica faced the common struggle of limited opportunities after college, a reality for many young adults with similar challenges.
But here's where it gets controversial... The statistics are stark. According to NHS figures, only 4.8% of adults with learning disabilities and autism are employed in England. This highlights the critical need for initiatives like Team Domenica.
What's even more remarkable is the program's success. Team Domenica reports that an impressive 86% of their candidates who gain employment stay in their positions for over two years!
Ms. Pink, with almost six years at the charity, passionately describes the candidates as "incredible." She highlights their "real confidence and determination," emphasizing the profound impact on their self-confidence and sense of belonging. "Feeling appreciated by employers and colleagues is really important," she adds, stating a fundamental right: "Everyone should have the right to do that."
