Oklahoma Electric Co-op Customers Question Soaring Electric Bills (2026)

Soaring Electric Bills Leave Oklahoma Families in the Dark – And It’s Not Just About the Numbers

Residents across East Central Oklahoma are reeling from shockingly high electricity bills, leaving many struggling to make ends meet. But here's where it gets controversial: while the co-op blames routine adjustments, customers are demanding answers and transparency, questioning whether the system is truly working in their favor.

From Beggs to Mounds, Okmulgee to Henryetta, the story is the same. Families are seeing their monthly bills skyrocket, with some reporting increases of hundreds of dollars. Karen Noland, a Beggs resident, shared her December bill of nearly $600, a staggering amount that’s become all too common. Others report similar spikes, leaving them scrambling to adjust their budgets and cover basic necessities.

And this is the part most people miss: It’s not just the high bills that are causing distress – it’s the unpredictability. Noland highlights the stress of not knowing what to expect, making it impossible to plan for the future. She points to the kilowatt-hour usage as a major culprit, often seeing discrepancies that don’t seem to align with her actual consumption.

The East Central Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, a member-owned, not-for-profit entity, attributes the increases to routine adjustments in the Power Cost Adjustment (PCA) and Consumer Cost Adjustment (CCA). They explain that the PCA directly reflects fuel costs, while the CCA helps stabilize rates by collecting revenue when needed and returning it to members when costs decrease. However, for families on fixed incomes, like Noland, who’s nearing retirement, the long-term uncertainty is alarming. Even when rates dip, they fear they’ll inevitably climb back up, leaving them in a constant state of financial limbo.

Is the system truly transparent? Some residents are calling for audits of electronic meters and more clarity on how usage is calculated. They want to understand why their bills are fluctuating so dramatically and whether the adjustments are fair. The co-op, while acknowledging the hardship, emphasizes its commitment to transparency, promising member engagement forums in 2026. But for many, that feels like too little, too late.

This situation raises important questions: Are routine adjustments enough to justify such steep increases? Should there be more safeguards in place to protect consumers from sudden spikes? And, most importantly, how can we ensure that the system is truly working for the people it serves? The conversation is far from over, and we want to hear from you. Do you think the co-op’s explanation is sufficient? What changes would you like to see implemented? Let us know in the comments below.
