Hampshire Cricket Club has named Russell Domingo as their new head coach, marking a significant addition to the team's coaching staff. This appointment comes as a two-year contract, spanning all cricket formats, and follows the departure of Adi Birrell, who left at the end of the previous season. The club's bowling coach is Shane Burger, a former Scotland head coach, while Jimmy Adams, a former club captain, continues as the batting coach.
Domingo, a 51-year-old South African, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He previously served as the head coach of South Africa for five years, from 2012, and more recently, took on the role of head coach for Lahore Qalandars in the 2025 Pakistan Super League in March. His coaching career also includes a stint with Bangladesh, where he resigned in 2022. During his time with South Africa, Domingo worked closely with Birrell, who was his assistant coach.
Despite his recent success, Domingo's coaching journey began at a young age. He obtained his first coaching qualification at just 22 years old. One of his notable achievements was leading Bangladesh to a historic 4-1 T20 international series win against Australia, their first victory across all formats.
Domingo expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, stating, 'I almost feel like I've been coaching Hampshire for five years.' He continued, 'One of my best friends, Adi Birrell, and I have a long history of working together. So, I've been very invested in the team's progress over the last couple of seasons.'
Looking ahead, Domingo is excited about the potential of Hampshire Cricket Club. He said, 'Hampshire is one of the top County Championship teams, and it's a privilege to be involved with such a prestigious club. It was an easy decision for me, as it presents an incredible opportunity. I believe the club is on the rise, particularly in white-ball cricket, and I'm eager to contribute to its continued success.'
