Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine Joins Infamous NYC Lockup with Venezuelan President
NEW YORK (AP) -- In a surprising turn of events, the embattled rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, has been transferred to the notorious Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York. This facility, known for its poor conditions and constant violence, is currently housing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, as well as Luigi Mangione, accused of killing Brian Thompson, the CEO of the country's largest health insurer.
The 29-year-old artist reported to the jail in a luxury van with internet personality Adin Ross and a camera crew streaming live as he turned himself in. This move comes after Hernandez admitted to assaulting a man and possessing drugs, violating the terms of his supervised release in a gang-related case.
Hernandez's lawyers did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but previously stated that the rapper was eager to complete his sentence to resume his music career. He was sentenced to three more months in federal custody, in addition to a 45-day sentence in 2024 for breaking the terms of his supervised release.
The rapper's journey to fame began with the release of his song "Gummo" in 2017, but the following year, he pleaded guilty to his involvement with the violent Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods gang. He was sentenced to two years in prison and five years of supervised release for his cooperation in the racketeering case.
Hernandez's latest sentence is related to small amounts of cocaine and ecstasy found at his Miami home during a police raid. Prosecutors also mentioned that he punched a man who taunted him at a Florida mall over his cooperation against gang members.
The MDC Brooklyn has a history of housing infamous inmates, including music stars R. Kelly and Sean "Diddy" Combs, as well as Ghislaine Maxwell, a longtime associate of Jeffrey Epstein. Despite its troubled reputation, the facility remains the only federal jail in New York City.
