Tiger Woods' Return to the Green: A Glimpse into the Future, But When?
It seems the legendary Tiger Woods is still a ways off from making a full-fledged comeback to competitive professional golf. While his Jupiter Links team celebrated a victory in the TGL Golf match on Monday, Woods himself, a fifteen-time major champion, shared that it will be "some time" before he's back on the course himself.
But here's where it gets interesting... Woods hasn't participated in an official PGA Tour event since July 2024, when he missed the cut at The Open. A significant setback followed when he ruptured his Achilles last March, leading to disc replacement surgery in October, which sidelined him for the entire 2025 season. Since his serious car accident in 2021, the 50-year-old has only managed 11 competitive starts, a testament to the immense challenges he's faced in his limited playing schedule.
When asked about his potential participation in the TGL this season, Woods expressed, "Playing here? I don't know. I like watching these guys. As far as competitive golf, it's still some time." He was part of three of Jupiter Links' four losses last year and is officially on the 2026 roster, but had already indicated he wouldn't be playing in the early matches. With just two more league games before the semi-finals and final, his latest comments strongly suggest he won't be stepping onto the TGL course this season.
And this is the part most people miss... With Woods turning 50, he's now eligible to compete on the PGA Tour Champions circuit from next season. This opens up the possibility of playing events on either the PGA Tour or the Champions Tour once he's fully recovered. While he could use a golf cart in regular-season events on the PGA Tour Champions, he downplayed any immediate return expectations in December, stating, "I'm a way away from that part of it and that type of decision, that type of commitment level." He elaborated that his recovery is a step-by-step process, and he'll assess his playing schedule once he feels comfortable with practicing, exploding, playing, and the subsequent recovery.
Could Koepka be in TGL Golf 2027?
In a fascinating turn of events, Brooks Koepka recently revealed that Tiger Woods was the first person he contacted after being released from his LIV contract to discuss his return to the PGA Tour. Koepka, a five-time major winner, decided to end his deal with the Saudi breakaway series a year early to spend more time with his family. As the chairman of the PGA Tour's Future Competitions Committee, Woods remains a pivotal figure, and it's no surprise that contemporaries like Koepka turn to him for advice.
Woods commented on Koepka's potential TGL participation next year, noting, "Brooks just got his feet wet being back on our Tour again at Torrey, and he's playing Waste Management this week." He also hinted at the TGL's expansion, mentioning, "We've got one new team next year, and should have two. I don't know when it's going to be sewn up or not. But who knows. If Brooks is going to be on a team or not on a team, but we have a great team here. My boys here, we've had so much fun going back and forth, and these group texts are just awesome."
