Tribute Night for Dave “Bookie” Bookman: 30 Toronto indie acts cover Big Star at The Garrison (2026)

In the world of music, some individuals leave an indelible mark, becoming champions of their craft and beloved figures within their communities. Such is the case with Dave "Bookie" Bookman, a local radio host and indie music enthusiast who passed away seven years ago at the age of 58. His legacy is celebrated through the third annual tribute show, a testament to his enduring impact on Toronto's music scene.

The event, organized by veteran promoter Elliott Lefko and musician Stephen Stanley, is a labor of love. It brings together 30 local artists and a killer backing band, all paying homage to Bookie's favorite band, Big Star. The concert, titled "I'm in Love with That Song," is a free fundraiser for the Daily Bread Food Bank, with attendees asked to donate non-perishable food items.

This year's tribute marks a shift in focus, moving away from previous years' tributes to The Tragically Hip and The Replacements. Lefko explains, "I wanted to do something to keep Bookie's memory alive and play the kind of music we both used to listen to." The event is a celebration of Bookie's spirit, his love for music, and his deep connection with his friends and the community.

The artists performing are a diverse and talented group, including Aaron Goldstein, Altered by Mom, Anna Mernieks (Beams), Charlotte Cornfield, and many more. Each performer will cover a song by Big Star, a band that Bookie held dear. The backing band, known as The Bookie Band, features a stellar lineup of musicians, adding to the evening's musical splendor.

Lefko highlights the unique appeal of Big Star, noting that while they are a niche band, their music is exceptional. "The funny thing about Big Star is that a lot of people wouldn't know who they are, but the music is so good." This tribute is not just about paying homage to a band but also about honoring the spirit of a friend and a champion of indie music.

The show is a testament to the power of community and the enduring impact of a beloved figure. It serves as a reminder that music can bring people together, create lasting memories, and provide a platform for artists to showcase their talent. As Stanley reflects, "The spirit we capture one night a year... is really the spirit Dave brought to life every day." This tribute is a celebration of that spirit, ensuring that Bookie's legacy continues to thrive in the hearts and minds of those he touched.
