Heatwave Alert: Western Australia's Scorching Start to 2026
Are you ready for a scorching start to the year? Western Australia is bracing for a sizzling weekend as temperatures soar past 40 degrees Celsius in several regions. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a heatwave warning for a large swath of the state, including the Pilbara, Gascoyne, Goldfields, Eucla, North and South Interior, and the Central Wheatbelt. Get ready to sweat it out as the mercury climbs to the mid-forties by the start of next week.
The heatwave is expected to bring severe conditions to large parts of the state, with the west coast and Wheatbelt areas reaching temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius. Kalgoorlie, for instance, will experience a maximum of 41 degrees Celsius on Saturday, with temperatures climbing to 43 degrees Celsius on Sunday and 44 degrees Celsius on Monday. The Pilbara region is also in for a scorching weekend, with Karratha forecast to reach 39 degrees Celsius over the weekend, and Newman and Port Hedland both set to hit 41 and 43 degrees Celsius, respectively.
In contrast, Perth's metro area will enjoy a more comfortable weekend, with temperatures hovering around the low thirties. So, while the rest of the state sweats, Perth will remain relatively cool and comfortable. But here's where it gets controversial...
