Yamaha M1 V4 Engine Safety Concerns: MotoGP Testing Halted (2026)

Yamaha's MotoGP testing has come to a halt, raising serious safety concerns about their new V4 engine. This development is a major setback, especially considering the engine issues experienced by Fabio Quartararo during the Sepang MotoGP test. While Quartararo's crash on the first day was unrelated, an engine problem he encountered later on Tuesday sparked safety worries, leading to Alex Rins, Jack Miller, and Toprak Razgatlioglu sitting out the following morning's session.

The issue, initially thought to be an electronics glitch, turned out to be more complex, with sources indicating that Yamaha faced similar problems during an earlier shakedown test. Team boss Maio Meregalli explained that the engineers wanted to thoroughly understand the cause before resuming testing, prioritizing rider safety above all else.

Despite Yamaha's concession status allowing them extra testing time, Meregalli emphasized the team's urgency to resolve the issue promptly. He expressed hope that a solution would be found soon, acknowledging that the team had already gathered valuable information during the previous week's shakedown.

However, Yamaha's riders have voiced concerns that the new V4 engine, designed to improve straight-line speed, still falls short of expectations. Rins revealed that a new and improved engine spec is unlikely to arrive before the first race in Thailand, highlighting the power deficit that persists.

This situation leaves Yamaha in a challenging position, with the team now facing the task of addressing the engine issues and potentially reevaluating their engine development strategy. The impact of these developments on Yamaha's performance in the upcoming MotoGP season remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the team's engineers have their work cut out for them.
